AbstractHarrington (Harvard) traces mind-body health and medicine from biblical exorcisms to 2005, when the Dalai Lama spoke about the benefits of Buddhist meditation to neuroscientists in Washington DC. This chronicle describes and connects early healing by hypnotism to the present self-help industry. It includes N. V. Peale’s "power of positive thinking" and H. Benson’s "relaxation response." Miracles at Lourdes, acupuncture, hypnosis, operant conditioning, the placebo effect, stress, biofeedback, yoga, holistic health, qigong, herbalism, laugh therapy, the Alameda County Study, social support, Transcendental Meditation, and posttraumatic stress disorder are all elements of the tale. This work reminds readers of the parts played by F. Mesmer, W. B. Cannon, H. Selye, H. F. Dunbar, Mary Baker Eddy, both Freuds, the Beatles, Bill Moyers, Bernie Siegel, Norman Cousins, and the Maharishi--to name only a few. M. K. Snooks formerly, University of Houston--Clear Lake
